Get DNSBL URI Filtering in IMF Tune v7 RC

IMF Tune v7 Release Candidate is now available for download. While edging closer to the final v7 release, this build brings DNS URI Block List filtering and fixes a known issue.

DNS URI Block List Configuration

DNS based filtering is being extended with the addition of URI Block List support. IMF Tune will dig links from the message body and submit them to the DNS URI Block List of your choice. These lists are very effective in blocking emails that contain malicious links or link to sites known to be affiliated to spammers.

The list configuration is nearly identical to that for DNS IP Lists. The only difference here is the Exception list which obviously takes URIs instead of IPs.

DNS URI List Providers are configured under: DNS Lists | DNS Block URI Lists

DNS Block URI Lists

Click Add to configure a new provider.

List Provider Add

Here we have the Provider Name, DNS list zone, Operation, SCL Change and the Status Codes configuration options. For details check the article discussing DNS IP List configuration.

Once configured, click on the Test button to verify the list. At the dialog that opens, specify the URI to be tested.

DNS List Test

DNS List Response

Unlike DNS IP Lists, URI Lists do not consistently adopt the same test URI to be used when verifying list access. Each provider defines his own test URI. IMF Tune automatically initializes the Test dialog with the correct test URI for most providers. However it is always recommended to check the provider documentation.

Apart for testing the designated test URI, we can of course also test any other URI.

The URI List configuration also provides an exception list. This is initialized with URIs of well-known domains that may safely skip processing. Exceptions eliminate many DNS queries and thus are beneficial in improving scanning performance.

We recommend adding entries to this exception list starting from your own public domains referred by users in their everyday work.

Fix for Known Issue

The issue identified in IMF Tune v7.0 BETA build 7.0.105.01 and documented in IMF Tune v7 Release Status & DNS URI Filtering is fixed in this Release Candidate build.

The problem required that at least one white/black list or SCL Rule is configured for DNS IP List filtering to work. This is no longer the case.

Version Information

This information applies to IMF Tune v7.0 Release Candidate build number 7.0.108.28. If IMF Tune is already installed you can verify the current build number from the configuration interface under the Miscellaneous category.
